Healthy Living Week took place from 22nd– 26th September 2014. The emphasis of this week was to encourage our students to have a healthy BODY, MIND & SOUL.

A huge range of sporting activities took place during the week which included Tag Rugby, Fun Athletics, & Zumba. Many students took part in Fencing and Yoga for the first time which they all really enjoyed. A huge thanks to Catherine Flood (Former Student) from Dublin City Council who invited her colleagues to instruct our girls in all the above activities.

We also had a huge range of workshops and talks from professionals working in the Health Care sector.

Frank Gilligan, Co-ordinator of Ballyfermot Local  Drugs & Alcohol Task Force   spoke to each year group about dependency. Claire O’Carroll from Concern spoke to the girls and raised awareness of the work the organisation does in developing countries to transform the lives of people living in the world’s poorest countries.

A very informative workshop was given to Senior Students by Four Steps to Help Programme providing simple & helpful information on suicide warning signs, how to start conversations, show concern & how to ask for and get help in the area of suicide prevention.

We also had a very interesting talk from Nurse Judy Brogan who informed girls on skincare routines and highlighted possible risks associated with the use of sun beds, piercings & tatoos.

David Phelan and Ger Cully from the HSE spoke to students about leading a healthy lifestyle and the dangers associated with smoking. Students also had the opportunity to use a carbon monoxide monitor to access the level of carbon monoxide in their lungs which they found fascinating.

Also, a big thank you to Social Worker Susan Crowley from Here 2 Help who works with young people in Relationships and Sexual Health Education. This workshop takes place over two sessions and our 5th years are eagerly looking forward to Susan’s return visit in November.

To rest and relax our weary bones after such a busy week two mechanical massage beds were set up by Tomas Ronan from the Back Pain Sports Injury Clinic in Gurteen Road for our Senior Students.

We are looking forward to next year’s Healthy Living Week already!!!!
